Known as the surfers paradise, Arugam bay is located in Ampara district, approximately 314km from Colombo city. Ranked one of the best three surfing points in the world Arugam bay receives many tourists and travelers during the year. The nearest town is Pottuvil which can be reached via A4 from Colombo.

Arugam bay is located in the dry zone of Sri Lanka and is rich in bird life and wildlife with the widespread jungle areas, wetlands and lagoons nearby. It is certainly one of the best beaches in Sri lanka for water sports and underwater photography which are some of the prime attractions.
Things to do in Arugam Bay
Surfing :
Even though it is a perfect location to surf throughout the year, the season is from April to October with the average height of waves being 1.5 to 2.5 meters. Main surf spots are Pottuvil point, Main Break and Crocodile Rock.
Dive :
Arugam bay is also a good location for snorkeling. Basses Reefs is a famous diving site where a lot of enthusiasts are seen scuba diving.
Wildlife Spotting :
Arugam Bay is also the gateway and the only road access to the Yala East National Park; one of the best places to catch a glimpse of the wildlife such as elephants, wild boar, deer and crocodiles.
Bird Watching :
Panama and the Lagoon of Pottuvil are areas that receive many birds during the months of November and December.
Things to see in Arugam Bay
Muhudu Maha Viharaya :
The ruins of a Buddhist temple on the sand dunes can be seen between Arugam Bay and Pottuvil.
Magul Maha Viharaya :
This boasts of the best – preserved moonstone in all of Asia.
Pottuvil Point :
This is the highest Place in Pottuvil and very popular with surfers. Wild elephants can often be seen around the area.
Crocodile Rock :
From afar the rock looks like a set of sun bathing crocodiles. Wild elephants and eagles can be seen around this area.
Okanda :
About 28 km south of Arugam Bay this is nother popular spot for surfing in Arugam Bay.
